World No.5 Greek star Maria Sakkari matched her career-best result at Wimbledon by advancing to the third round. The Greek star defeated Viktoriya Tomova 6-4, 6-3 in the second round.
Wimbledon is the only Slam at which Sakkari has yet to make the Round of 16. Standing in Sakkari’s way of the second week this year is Germany’s Tatjana Maria. The two will face off on Friday.
After triumph over Viktoriya Tomova on No.1 Court on Wednesday, the Greek sensation is now within reach of achieving her best effort yet at Wimbledon.
The world No.5 reached semi-finals at Roland-Garros and in the US Open last year to confirm herself as a competitor who could challenge at Grand Slam level.
Those performances eclipsed her deeds at the All England Club, where Sakkari’s best efforts had come when reaching the third round in 2017 and 2019.
“Of course, the more energy you can save for the later rounds, the better it is,” she said.
“I am really enjoying my time here. I have my family here with people. I have people I love. It is very special.”
“It has been a long time since I played on this court,” Sakkari said.
“I am very happy to play today and win on one of the best courts in the world. I am enjoying my game on the grass and every single match in this tournament.”
“I’m just enjoying my game on the grass because there were certain people saying I could never play on the grass, but I believe that I really can because I’m a good mover, I have a good serve,” Sakkari said. “As I said, I’ve been playing more aggressive, so I don’t see why not doing well on this surface.”
Maria Sakkari will play German Tatjana Maria, whom she defeated in a tight match at the Australian Open in January, for a place in the fourth round.
