American teenager Coco Gauff impresses Centre Court with a straight sets victory over Romania’s Mihaela Buzarnescu.
As she took to Centre Court for a fourth time on Thursday, the Florida-based teenager underlined her ability to rapidly build on that success.
With a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Romania’s Mihaela Buzarnescu, Gauff improved her record at Wimbledon to eight wins against two losses. After progressing to the recent Roland-Garros final, the American has claimed 26 match wins in the 12 Grand Slams she’s contested.
Gauff next faces Amanda Anisimova in an all-American encounter, knowing that expectations are rapidly rising this Wimbledon. But asked about pressure, the teenager confidently pointed to opportunity.
“I know that compared to three years ago there’s definitely a lot more people expecting me to be win but, you know, I think that 15-year-old me would still be proud that I’m still playing on Centre Court,” she smiled.
“Wimbledon was the start of everything for me so it’s always special and I think that playing on this court is one of (my) greatest privileges.”
