French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz visit the Brandenburg Gate, which was illuminated in Ukrainian colors, in Berlin on Monday.
Recently reelected French President Emmanuel Macron joined German Chancellor Olaf Scholz at a Berlin landmark Monday as the Brandenburg Gate was illuminated in the colors of the Ukrainian flag.
Both leaders had reiterated their solidarity with Ukraine at an earlier news conference and called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to deescalate the situation quickly.
Emmanuel Macron and Olaf Scholz and also confirmed their support for a stronger European Union, with Scholz saying that Germany would not be the country to veto increased EU sovereignty and cohesion.
After the meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz ,he said,”After my inauguration on Saturday, I wanted to emphasize the outstanding importance of Franco-German friendship on my first trip abroad. All the more so as we meet today, May 9th, Europe Day. Delighted at this gathering, dear Olaf.”

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz also said in a tweet ,”Our Franco-German friendship is more important today than ever – also as a motor and source of inspiration for the European project. We are both firmly convinced that Europe can only succeed together. Dear @EmmanuelMacron , we want to continue on this common path.”
